چکیده مقاله:
Background and Objectives: Every human smile is unique and special, reflecting the different shapes, textures, and colors of the teeth as well as their combinations. The aim of this review article is to present a protocol to assess patient's smile.Materials & Methods: literature research has been performed using electronic data bases such as Google scholar, Pubmed and scopus using the following keyword: “Dental esthetics”, “Smile esthetics”, “Oral esthetics”, and “Esthetics in orthodontics”.Findings: More than ۳۰ articles were reviewed. The ideal smile is based on the relationship developed between the hard and soft tissues into ۳ distinct components: the lip framework, the gingival tissues, and the dentition. The most important and effective factors that aid esthetic planning are smile arc, maxillary central incisor ratio and symmetry, anterosuperior teeth ratio, gingival design, buccal corridor, midline and tooth angulation, details such as tooth color and anatomical shape, lip volume. Special attention is given to disposition of anterosuperior teeth (canine to canine or first premolar to first premolar) or the area known as esthetic zone where central incisors are known as key elements and characterize the term "dominance of central incisors".Conclusions: The integration of aesthetic criteria is needed in order to guarantee satisfactory and predictable dental treatment outcomes. The aim is to achieve harmony rather than symmetry in the redefinition of the smile, because people's faces are naturally asymmetric. The idea, then, is to create a balanced harmonious smile in relation to the patient's face, which is more important than trying to create a mathematically perfect symmetrical smile
