Prevalence of Geographic Tongue and Related Factors in Semnan Dental Faculty

Background and Objectives: Geographic tongue are enclosed circular plaques with margins of yellowish-white lines. They usually occur in the anterior two-thirds of the dorsal borders and of the tongue and other mucosal surfaces. In order to prevention programs, it is necessary to be aware of the prevalence of various abnormalities. The purpose of this research is to investigate the prevalence of geographic tongue and some related factors in Semnan Dental FacultyMaterials & Methods: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, the files of ۱۰۰۰ patients were examined in terms of geographic tongue and suspected related factors such as age, sex, smoking, diabetes and other underlying diseases.Results: ۶۳.۶% of patients were women and ۳۶.۴% were men (age range of ۱۵-۷۸ years). ۲۷.۷% had at least one systemic disease. ۸۰ patients (۸%) had geographic tongue and it had a ۴.۸ times chance of occurrence in patients with epilepsy and seizures with significant relationship .However , there was no significant relationship with gasterointestinal problems, thyroid problems, blood pressure, diabetes, liver disease, anemia, cardiovascular disease and coagulation diseases. Conclusions: The relationship between geographic tongue and epilepsy and seizures shows the need for periodic examinations of the mouth and especially the tongue by dentists in order to help to timely diagnosis of systemic diseases.
