Ulcer management of diabetic foot ulcer patients

Introdoction: A diabetic foot ulcer, one of the most important complications of diabetes, is a major problem in the management of patients with diabetes. Propolis is a resinous substance processed by worker bees that has been of interest in clinical studies for wound healing due to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the effect of propolis and honey lotion on the healing of diabetic foot ulcersMethods: This is a randomized clinical trial study(IRCT۲۰۲۰۰۱۱۳۰۴۶۱۲۰N۱). In this study, ۶۰ patients (over ۱۸ years old) with diabetic foot ulcers were randomly selected according to Wagner's classification. The participants were randomly divided into two control and intervention groups. General treatments including blood sugar control and antibiotic therapy were performed for both groups of patients. In the intervention group, a layer of lotion containing propolis and honey paste was used. The intervention was carried out for ۴ weeks. Then the images taken before and after the intervention were processed and finally analyzed using statistical methods.Results: The average age of the participants in this study in the control and intervention groups was ۵۴.۲۰±۶.۸۵ and ۵۶.۷۳±۸.۶۸, respectively. There was no significant difference in terms of gender between the participants in the two study groups. Investigations showed that before the intervention, there was no significant difference between the patients in the two study groups in terms of wound size (P = ۰.۰۶۸). Also, analysis of the data after the intervention showed that the group receiving propolis and honey lotion had a significantly smaller wound size compared to the usual treatment in the control group (P < ۰.۰۰۱).Conclusions: The results of the present study showed that the use of propolis and honey lotion can be effective in wound healing in patients with diabetes.
