Effects of cognitive behavioral therapy on problematic pornographic use: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Background and aim To evaluate the effects of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) on problematic pornographic use.Methods The preliminary search strategy was on population /Intervention /Comparison /Outcomes /Study Design (PICOS), PRISMA-P checklist and with this review question. Also, it was based on the following terms and phrases: (“Pornography” OR “Eroticism” OR “Internet pornography use” OR “online pornography” OR “Internet sex addiction” OR “Internet pornography” OR “Cyber pornography” AND “Cognitive Behavioral Therapy” OR “CBT”). The search was conducted in English and other languages. We first reviewed related studies by searching in Cochrane and Prospero databases. Then, electronic bibliographic databases such as Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), PubMed, Scopus, PubPsych, Google Scholar and Iranian database (SID and Iranmedex) were searched until ۰۱.۱۰.۲۰۲۱. In the end, we reviewed others databases (for gray literatures, e.g. Conference papers, key journals and etc.). Study selection, data extraction, and study quality evaluation will all be handled by two authors. Any differences between two writers will be resolved by discussion by a third author. STAT ۱۴ software was used for statistical analysis.Results According to the results, the mean standardized difference between the two groups (treatment and control) was ۰.۶۸۴ (۹۵% CI: –۰.۶۷۹ to ۲.۰۴۶), which was statistically significant (p = ۰.۰۱۱) and exhibited an improvement in the intervention group.Conclusions Behavioral treatments may aid in bridging the gap between research results and clinical practice, as well as offering guidance for selecting the best treatment choices for people with the PPU
