The Importance of Specific and Special Programs in the Development of Fundamental Movement Skills

Fundamental motor skills are the base for more advanced movement patterns in daily life and specialized and skilled movements. Skills practiced later in life depend on the improvements that occur during the development of fundamental motor skills. In addition, the developing and achieving a high level of fundamental motor skills depends on a variety of experiential factors including but not limited to opportunities for practice, encouragement, and instruction in an environment suitable for learning. A recent research has shown that the most popular sport in any country does not determine the level of mastery of fundamental motor skills by the children in that country. Rather, the implementation of direct goals for the development of fundamental motor skills and the comprehensiveness of the physical education curriculum played a critical role leading to a higher percentage of children mastering basic skills. Therefore, the necessity of designing specialized programs by competent institutions such as the Ministry of Education is highly recommended to increase the possibility for the children becoming proficient in fundamental motor skills.
