TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE ENERGY TECHNOLOGY

Sustainable energy technology (SCT) is becoming one of the most important challenges for the oil & gas industry in the new millennium. This technology issue is gaining world-wide attention in view of the continued depletion of energy resources and emission of greenhouse gases. This paper focuses on problems and challenges for the oil & gas industry today and in the future with special reference to environmental concerns. It demonstrates that how these concerns can be effectively addressed in evaluation of energy sources in the light of the ability to fulfill the requirements of sustainable energy technology development for developing countries. It analyses the current state of energy industry in its march towards the new millennium based upon the results of a major exercise in the form of regional survey initiated at IEF. The survey in the form of a comprehensive questionnaire involved considered views, best practice case studies, design methods, sustainability indicators, energy as a both product & service etc. It probes issues like conservation of oil & gas reserves, enhancement of new and existing production techniques and need for holistic education, training & research in energy technology. Paper proposes new methods for increased petroleum industry's capacity for sustainable production which are classified into following six main categories which reinforce one another. Design; New Technologies; Controls; Corporate Culture; New processes, and Saving Materials. The challenges and opportunities of energy efficiency and a plan of action of a newly constituted Energy Efficiency Commission (EEC) towards sustainable energy industry are briefly described.
