Off Record Strategy: A Pragmatic Approach to James Dashner's The Maze Runner

Politeness in communication is a way to save the hearer’s social image or face.The present study focuses on Off-Record Strategies in James Dashner’s The Maze Runner (۲۰۰۹). Based on Brown and Levinson (۱۹۸۷), Off-record Strategies are types of Politeness Strategies defined as constructing utterances that are either more general or different from what the utterer means. The findings show that the characters have used seven strategies out of fifteen strategies of bald-on-record including, Understate, Overstate, Use tautologies, Use Contradictions, Be Ironic, Use Rhetorical Questions, and Be Incomplete, Use Ellipsis. These strategies reflect the proper manner of speech in specific circumstances aiming to maintain fruitful social relationships with the hearer.
