چکیده مقاله:
Self-concept has long been assessed as a global and unidimensional construct among parents of childrenwith ASD (Mak & Kwok, ۲۰۱۰; Werner & Shulman, ۲۰۱۵; Wong et al., ۲۰۱۶). However, recent researchsuggests that self-concept may be a more diverse and multifaceted concept. For example, stigmatizedindividuals may differ not only in the degree to which they endorse their self-image thoughts, referred toas self-image content, but also in how frequently and automatically they think about their self-imagethoughts. as a mental habit, known as the “self-image process” (Chan & Mack, ۲۰۱۷). Because thecontent of self-motivating thoughts may only partially explain the psychological consequences of selfimage, considering the process by which parents experience these thoughts may enhance ourunderstanding of self-image.Only a few studies have examined self-concept among parents of children with ASD (Mc & Cook, ۲۰۱۰;Werner & Shulman, ۲۰۱۵; Wong et al., ۲۰۱۶). These studies have also focused on the content of selfreports. To the best of our knowledge, no studies have examined the process of self-image among parentsof children with ASD. Guided by the content-process theory of self-stigma (Chan & Mack, ۲۰۱۷), thepresent study addressed an important gap in the literature by examining the content and process of selfstigmaamong parents of children with ASD. Content refers to the degree of attitudinal endorsement ofself-conceptual thoughts, while process refers to the degree to which self-conceptual thoughts arehabitually repeated in everyday life. Parents of children with ASD, aware of socially stigmatizing thoughts against them, may endorse andinternalize the content of such thoughts to varying degrees (Corrigan & Watson, ۲۰۰۲). If parentsperceive the stigma as fair and legitimate, they are more likely to agree with their socially stigmatizingthoughts and develop self-stigmatizing ideas (Corrigan & Watson, ۲۰۰۲).
