A Comparative Study of Hedges and Boosters in English andPersian Newspaper Football Articles

Studies have focused on hedges and boosters as metadiscourse markers. Soccer stories innewspapers in English and Persian show significant differences. To situate the relationship betweenauthor and reader and to clarify their epistemic stance, authors often use hedges and boosters ascrucial metadiscursive resources. The individuals who use these identifiers may differ acrosscultures. The textual studies have also shown that the distinct hedge and booster patterns have acombined interactive effect on soccer-related newspaper articles in both English and Persian. Thecurrent study, which investigates the frequency of the nature and purpose of hedges and boosters inEnglish and Persian newspaper articles about soccer, combines qualitative and quantitativemethods. The results show that Persian writers prefer to use a large number of boosters and a smallnumber of hedges, in contrast to English writers. Compared to the Persian writers, the Englishwriters used more hedges and fewer boosters.
