Contact toxicity of Lavandula angustifolia Mill and Zataria multiflora Bioss essential oils against Callosobruchus maculatus adults (Coleoptera: Bruchidae)

In last decades, many researches has been down on use of botanical compound specially essential oilsas insecticides. In the present study, the contact toxicity of Lavandula angustifolia and Zataria multifloraessential oils were evaluated on both sexes of 1-2 day-old C. maculatus adults at 30±1ºC, 60±5% RH anddark condition. Essential oils were obtained by hydro distillation. The toxicity of both oils against malesand females was significantly associated with concentration. On the basis of LC50 ratios and their 95%confidence limits, there was no significant differences between sensitivity of males and females. TheLC50 values against males were 719 and 598 l.m-2 and against females were 787 and 738 l.m-2 for L.angustifolia and Z. multiflora respectively. The both oils showed notable toxicity on cowpea Vignaunguiculata (L.) Walp seed germination. According to these results it seems that L. angustifolia and Z.multiflora essential oils can be suitable alternatives to conventional pesticides against C. maculatus adult.
