On the Relationship between Fluid Intelligence and Translation Quality of Different Text Types of Iranian Translation Students

The aim of conducting the present research was to find the relationship between translations students fluid intelligence and their translation quality with respect to operative, expressive, and informative texts. As the first phase, ۵۳ male and female undergraduate translation students doing their B.A in English translation at Kowsar and Payam e Noor Universities were selected. Having passed TOEFL test as proficiency test, ۴۲ of them remained as the participants of the study. Next, Raven’s test was run in ۵۰ minutes to catch the level of participants with regard to their fluid intelligence. Following, three texts, expressive, operative and informative, were given to the participants to be translated in Persian in allocated time. Two raters were asked to evaluate the quality of translations based on Goff-Kfouri’s rubrics. Based on the obtained data, there was a moderate, positive correlation between translation quality and fluid intelligence [r=.۴۸, n=۴۲, p<.۰۵]. Moreover, the researcher found a moderate, positive correlation between translation of operative text and fluid intelligence [r=.۳۷, n=۴۲, p<.۰۵] as well as in translation of expressive texts positive correlation between the two variables [r=.۳۱, n=۴۲, p<.۰۵]. However, in translation of informative text, there was no significant relationship between the two variables since the significant value was more than .۰۵ <۰.۱۳. As for the adaptation of creative translation strategies based on Schjoldager’s (۲۰۰۸) model, addition and direct transfer were the most frequent translation strategies by participants with high and low levels of fluid intelligence.
