Semantic and Structural Analysis of Cohesion andCoherence in Proverbs

This study will be of great importance to linguists and sociolinguists, who will be able to know the exact meaning of the proverb expressions. It aims to collect and classify cohesion and coherence semantically and structurally in proverbs.The researchers have designed an experimental method, especially for this purpose. The researchers collected ۷۸ items, and the collected items were classified structurally into two subfields: noun phrases and adjectives. The semantic field was divided into three subfields: literal, metaphorical, and both. The results of the structure analysis indicate that most items are noun phrases ۶۰ (۷۶.۹۲%), while ۱۸ (۲۳.۰۸%) are considered an adjective. On the semantic field level, the metaphorical proverbs field got the highest percentage among the items with ۵۲(۶۶.۶۷%); the rest of the proverbs were divided between literal ۱۹(۲۴.۳۶%) and both (metaphorical and literal) proverbs ۷(۸.۹۷%) items. In conclusion, the paper classified and analyzed color and number in proverbs in the North Gaza strip structurally and semantically.
