Mobile Health Technology for Monitoring and Management of Inflammatory Bowel Disease: a systematic review of technical aspects

Background and aims: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is gastrointestinal disorder that ischronic, and debilitating, and diminishes the quality of life. In recent years, with a better understandingof the pathophysiology of the disease, as well as advances in mobile health technology,we have had new strategies in the management of IBD. This study aimed to summarize the technicalaspects of using mobile health in IBD patients.Method: The study protocol adopted the PRISMA guidelines. A systematic review was performedusing PubMed, Web of science and Scopus to identify articles using M-health Technologies inEnglish literature and published from ۲۰۱۰ to ۲۰۲۲. Based on the predefined selection criteria, ۲levels of screening were performed.Results: We retrieved ۱۹۷ potential articles were from the ۳ databases. After ۲ levels of screening,only ۱۲ articles that met our inclusion criteria were identified. The findings indicate thatApplications have been designed with different purposes, including education, treatments, diseasecontrol, monitoring, communication between patients and healthcare providers, and improvedhealth outcomes. In ۹ (۷۵%) studies Mobile apps developed in two formats (web-based and mobile-based), and only ۳ (۲۵%) studies have integrated with electronic health records. In ۱۰ studies(۸۴%), Applications have been evaluated from different aspects, including usability, accuracy,feasibility, satisfaction, and effectiveness.Conclusion: Mobile health technologies can improve quality of life, quality of care and self-managementin IBD patients. Future studies and app design for IBD should include integration andinteroperability of mobile apps with EHRs.
