Linguistic insecurity

Language insecurity has been introduced as one of the critical factors in hindering communication. Language insecurity entails a feeling of discomfort, fear, or anxiety experienced when using or trying to use a first or second language due to various environmental, perceptual, and interpersonal factors. It has mostly affected people who use a language to communicate. Language insecurity is more prevalent in bilingual areas. Each language has a special place in society, and the use of one against the other shows the power dynamics. Language or linguistic insecurity may have negative effects, including a lack of self-confidence, which can prevent the correct use of the language or lead to the erosion of capacities and a loss of confidence in one's language mastery. The present paper includes a concise review on linguistic insecurity definitions as well as effective factors and reasons in its development. In addition, different linguistic insecurity types are presented and discussed.
