The impact and role of renewable energy and electricity and their challenges

The technology of using the forces of nature to do work to meet human needs is as old as the first sailing ship. But as the industrial revolution progressed based on concentrated energy locked up in fossil fuels, attention shifted away from renewable sources. This was compounded by the increasing use of fossil fuel based grid electricity and the importance of high density portable energy sources for transportation the age of oil. As electricity demand has increased, with supply largely dependent on fossil fuels plus some hydropower and then nuclear power, concerns have arisen about carbon dioxide (CO۲) emissions contributing to possible global warming. Attention is being turned again to the vast sources of energy that ripple in nature around us especially the sun, wind and seas. There was no doubt about their magnitude, the challenge has always been to harness them in order to meet the demand for reliable and affordable electricity.
