The impact of role-playing on the speaking skills of Iranian EFL learners

This investigation looks at improvement in learners’ speaking skills through role play in the classroom and it also study examined the student’s attitudes toward the using role play in the classroom. About ۶۰ students among ۱۰۰ students through OPT were selected and were divided into an experimental and a control group. They were studying English at Kian institute in Khomein, Iran. They participated in this study from April ۲۰۱۶ until June ۲۰۱۶ in the speaking classes. During this time control group was instructed through ordinary methods but in teaching experimental group role play was used. For the research, qualitative data was collected in the form of questionnaires and quantitative data collected students’ performance on the pre and posttest so that at the first a pretest was administrated and after treatment posttest was administrated. The result shows learners’ improvement in speaking skills through role play and positive attitudes of students toward speaking skills. From the response of the student’s questionnaire it has become clear that role play has been enthusiastically accepted by the students as it enables them to speak more logically and confidently in the classroom.
