The need for nursing informatics in undergraduate nursing education: a systematic review

چکیده مقاله:

Introduction and Objective: Nurses are the largest group of health professionals in all areas of healthcare, which requires attention to their digital health-related roles and capabilities in providing quality care. Therefore, they are expected to receive the necessary training to use technology innovations in the clinical setting. The aim of this study was to investigate the need for nursing informatics in undergraduate nursing education.Search Method: The present study is a systematic review and is based on Persian and English articles extracted from Iranian databases: SID, Magiran, Iranmedex and foreign: CINAHL, ProQuest, Ovid, PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, using the keywords nurse, educational need, nursing informatics, nursing education, medical informatics and other related keywords along with its English equivalent. Inclusion criteria included publication of article between ۲۰۱۲ and ۲۰۲۲, research articles related to the need for nursing informatics education in undergraduate level, which scored an acceptable score in Gifford quality assessment, published in Persian and English, and access to full text. In the initial review of the studies, duplicates were removed, then full text of the studies selected by the two reviewers was evaluated independently.Results: The result of the search was ۸۶ articles related to the subject, and finally ۱۲ completely related studies were included in the research. The results showed that nursing informatics is used in all fields of nursing. In nursing practice, it is used to track patient outcomes, find data trends, and evaluate workloads and interventions. In education; Nursing Informatics supports virtual teaching and learning, assessment and analysis related to educational outcomes. Nursing managers also use nursing informatics to improve workflow, decision support, and resource management. Therefore, developed countries such as Australia, Canada, Denmark and United States of America have taken important steps in the field of nursing informatics education in undergraduate nursing and have considered the need for this.Conclusion: Given the increasing use of technology in health care, it is important to ensure that nursing students are qualified to use information and communication technology in the clinical setting after graduation. Therefore, the integration of nursing informatics in undergraduate nursing education in Iran seems necessary.
