A review of the impact of various rehabilitation and care interventions for the elderly with Alzheimer's disease

Introduction and objective: Alzheimer's is a type of gradual collapse of the brain that leads to loss of memory and perception. This disease is one of the ten main causes of death in the elderly, and recent studies show a significant increase in the incidence of this disease. There is no definite preventive treatment in the functional process of this disease, but non-pharmacological treatments and rehabilitation are a clinical practice in addition to standard outpatient care. So far, no extensive comparison has been made for the use of rehabilitation methods, and the purpose of this study is to review the impact of rehabilitation programs on the quality of life of Alzheimer's patients.Method: First, keywords Nursing care, Rehabilitation Exercise, Art and music therapy, Reminiscence therapy, Alzheimer's were searched in PubMed, science direct, Google scholar, information databases in the period from ۲۰۱۰ to ۲۰۲۱ by ۲ researchers and ۴۰ articles were found, after removing duplicate articles. And unrelated, ۱۷ clinical trial articles with full text were included in the study.Results: Rehabilitation care brings positive results in improving the quality of life of elderly people with Alzheimer's. Among these interventions, we can mention sports, memory therapy, occupational therapy, multimedia training, psychological treatments, art therapy, music therapy, sculpture, nursing rehabilitation care, multidisciplinary rehabilitation program and learning strategy training. In the reviewed studies, a number of ۴ articles pointed out the positive effect of music therapy in improving the quality of life of patients. On the other hand, out of ۴ studies conducted in the field of sports, the results of ۳ studies showed no significant relationship. The results of ۷ studies on the positive effect of memory therapy, psychological therapy, sculpting, nursing rehabilitation care, multidisciplinary rehabilitation program and learning strategy training and ۲ studies on the possible positive effect of occupational therapy and multimedia training on the quality of life of patients with dementia, especially Alzheimer's, they pointed out.Conclusion: According to the results of the studies, some rehabilitation interventions can be used to improve the lives of the elderly with Alzheimer's benefited but according to the inconsistent results of some studies, different rehabilitation interventions need more attention and investigation.
