چکیده مقاله:
Introduction and objective: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system, but its cause is still unknown. According to studies, viral infections can play a role in the occurrence of multiple sclerosis. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of investigating the role of viral infections in the incidence of multiple sclerosis. Methods: The present study was a review study designed in ۲۰۲۲. The search was conducted in international and national databases, including Scientific Information Database (SID), PubMed and Scopus, using the following keywords: “viral infections”, “multiple sclerosis” and “incidence”. Summaries of articles published in congresses and conferences were excluded from the study. Initially, ۱۲ articles in English or Persian were finally evaluated. Result: By reviewing various researches, it was shown that viral infections have a positive relationship in the occurrence of multiple sclerosis. According to the studies, infection with different types of viruses, especially EBV and CMV herpes viruses, can be a trigger or one of the contributing factors in the development of this disease. This type of virus initially does not stimulate the immune system because it is in its dormant period and when faced with different stimuli, it is activated and by damaging the central nervous system to which it tends to cause multiple sclerosis. Conclusion: By examining various results, it was found that viral infections are effective environmental factors in the occurrence of multiple sclerosis, so it is better to prevent the occurrence of multiple sclerosis in such patients by conducting periodic tests and taking necessary care and educating people.
