Impact of cigarettes and hookah smoking on coronary artery disease

Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been identified as one of the major cause ofdeath worldwide. Tobacco use is one of the established risk factors for CVD that ۲۹% of regardeddeaths can be attributed it. Even though tobacco smoking with hookah is increasing globally, thereis limited data available for evaluating the impact of that on CVD. In this study, we evaluatedeffect of hookah on coronary artery involvement based on coronary angiography.Methods: In this case-control study, a total number of ۲۵۶ patients were divided into two groups:۱۲۸ patients as the case group who had stenosis at least ۵۰% in left main or more than ۷۰% inothers and ۱۲۸ patients as the control group with normal angiography. Then we evaluated thepossible risk factors of CAD between two groups.Results: The findings of univariate logistic regression showed that smoking was significantlyassociated with CAD in population with diabetes (P = ۰.۰۲۹), dyslipidemia (P = ۰.۰۰۵), andhypertension (P = ۰.۰۵). By adjusting other risk factors, smokers were almost ۸ times more likelyto develop CAD than non-smokers (P <۰.۰۰۱, CI = ۹۵%, ۳.۲۳-۲۰.۰, OR = ۸.۰۵). Also, the odds ofdeveloping CAD in people who use hookah was ۵ times higher than the non-hookah users (P =۰.۰۰۱, CI =۹۵%, ۲.۴۵-۱۲.۵۱, OR = ۵.۵۳).Conclusion: Smoking cigarettes a hookah has a significant impact on CAD. Smoking cigarettesare comparatively more associated with coronary artery diseases than hookah considering otherrisk factors
