The impact of smoking on oral cancer: A review

Background: Oral cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world and one of the ۱۰ mostcommon causes of death. Also, smoking increases the risk of many oral diseases, especially oralcancer. Therefore, the present study was designed to investigate the effect of smoking on oralcancer.Methods: The present study was a summary review study designed in ۲۰۲۲. To search for similararticles, valid scientific databases such as PubMed / Medline, Scopus and ISI (Web of Sciences)were used. Selected keywords according to the MeSH guidelines included 'Oral cancer', 'smoking'and 'Tobacco', which were searched using the AND-OR operators. Initially, ۵۶ articles wereretrieved, and after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, ۲۵ articles were extracted.Inclusion criteria included the availability of the full text of the article, Latinness of the article andexclusion criteria also included: abstracts of papers presented at congresses and conferences.Results: By examining the various studies, it was found that oral cancer in most cases is caused bysquamous cell carcinoma and tobacco has a significant effect on causing oral squamous cellcarcinoma. Some studies indicate that both smoking and chewing tobacco increase the risk of oralcancer and the rate of its progression, but some other studies indicate that chewing tobacco has noeffect on the development of this disease.Conclusion: The tobacco contained in cigarettes causes a wide range of diseases, including oralcancer. Therefore, recommending to quit smoking, reducing access to cigarettes and tobacco, andscreening smokers should be done in order to prevent and reduce the incidence of this disease.
