چکیده مقاله:
Background: Long-term cigarette smoking (LTCS) is an important risk factor for thedevelopment of bronchial cancer, smoking-related interstitial lung fibrosis, and chronic obstructivepulmonary disease. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of regular exercise on theexpression of interferon gamma lung gene in rats induced by cigarette smoke. Methods: Twenty-four male Wistar rats were randomly divided into ۳ equal groups: healthycontrol (Con), Cigarette smoke extract (CSE), CSE+exercise (CSE+Ex). Rats in the healthycontrol group were injected intraperitoneal with ۱۵۰ microliters (μL) of vehicle (normal saline)and CSE groups with ۱۵۰ microliters (μL) of CSE-PBS solution for ۷ days. Interval exercise (۴minutes each period with ۸۰-۹۰% VO۲max and separated by ۳ minutes with ۶۵-۷۵% VO۲max)was performed on the rodent treadmill ۵ days a week for ۴ weeks. RT-PCR method was used toinvestigate changes in IFN-γ gene expression. The data were analyzed by one-way analysis ofvariance. Results: The expression of IFN-γ gene in the CSE group showed a significant increase comparedto the healthy control group (p<۰.۰۵), and a significant decrease in the CSE+Ex group comparedto the CSE group (p<۰.۰۵).Conclusion: It seems that prolonged exposure to cigarette smoke increases the release of theinflammatory cytokine interferon gamma in the lung tissue, and regular exercise can moderate thisfactor. However, more studies are needed, especially in human samples.
