Qualitative study of strategies predicting smoking in Bandar Abbas boys"schools: application of protection motivation theory

Background: Smoking is a global problem and endangers the physical and mental health ofstudents. The present study was conducted with the aim of explaining the strategies for predictingsmoking consumption from the perspective of students, parents and school officials based on theprotection motivation theory.Methods: The present study is a qualitative research of the content analysis type, which wasconducted in boys" high schools in Bandar Abbas city. The data was obtained in the form of indepthsemi-structured and individual interviews among ۳۳ people including: ۱۴ male high schoolstudents, ۱۱ parents and ۸ managers and teachers. Data analysis was done using the method ofqualitative content analysis guided by the theory. Theoretical saturation was achieved after face-tofacesemi-structured interviews that were selected through purposive and snowball sampling. Gubaand Lincoln criteria were used for the strength of the research.Result: After analyzing the interviews, ۵ categories, ۱۲ subcategories and ۱۱۰ primary codes wereobtained. The categories and subgroups were: ۱- Individual factors ۲- Perceived risk ۳- Fear of theharmful consequences of the disease ۴- Social and cultural factors ۵- Environmental factors.Conclusion: The strategies for predicting tobacco consumption in boys" schools are health andpreventive guidelines from tobacco consumption and effective interventions at different individual,environmental and social levels, and without detailed knowledge of interpersonal interactions,customs and culture of a society, it is impossible. It created effective interventions.
