THE ALGERIAN DIGITAL NETWORK

The seismic monitoring started in Algeria in 1910 when the first seismological station was installed. After the El Asnam earthquake of October 10th, 1980, Algeria benefited of a Telemetry Seismic Network formed by 32 analogical stations. This network was strongly damaged during the period1992-1998. Reinstallation of the network allowed a better understanding of the seismic activity in Algeria. The occurrence of the Boumerdes of May 21st, 2003 indicated the need to update the seismic monitoring by introduction of new technologies. Installation of a new digital seismic network started recently. It is formed by 20 broadband stations and 50 short period stations. Because the former network covers only the Tellian region of Algeria, the new Algerian network will be extended along the entire part of the Atlas region.
