Relationship between workplace ergonomics and mental healthin health-care workers: a systematic review

Introduction: Ergonomics is the design of the work environment and task according to the capacities of theusers. Not paying attention to the principles of ergonomics and ignoring them in the workplace causes a lot ofdamage and costs for employees and employers and reduces the efficiency of people. Mental health is importantin all areas of life, including personal and social life. Also, the concept of mental health is a feeling of wellbeing,self-efficacy assurance, self-reliance, competition capacity and self-fulfillment of potential intellectualand emotional abilities. Emotional and psychological disorders are one of the important and increasing factorsof disease, disability and reduction of quality of life in all societies.Materials and Methods: The present study is a systematic review with the aim of evaluate relationship betweenthe ergonomics of the workplace and the mental health of health care workers, which was conducted accordingto the PRISMA protocol. Search in Scopus, Web of science, Pubmed and Google Scholar search engine using(AND and OR) operators and according to PICO done. The STROBE checklist was used to check the qualityof compliance.Results: After searching in Scopus, Web of science, Pubmed and Google Scholar search engine, ۵۹ articleswere found. Of the ۵۹ articles found, ۲ articles were removed due to duplication and ۴۶ articles due to lack ofrelevance, and ۶ articles were removed from the remaining ۱۱ articles due to lack of access, and finally ۵articles were included in the systemic review.Conclusion: There is a clear relationship between satisfaction with quality of work life (QWL) and lower riskof mental illness. There are variables that can increase burnout and mental health disorder risk, such as beingfemale, being young, having a moderate or poor perception of health, having low work commitment, andworking in services with high stress levels. Job burnout is a phenomenon that is caused by a group of stressfulfactors in the work environment. This situation gradually becomes unbearable for the employees of thatenvironment and leads them to psychological and social isolation. Since there is a relationship between theergonomics of the work environment and stress, therefore, following the principles of ergonomics can reducestress and improve the mental health of health care workers.
