Polyurethanes, particularly their water-based dispersions, have recently gained increasing attention due to their extensive applications in plastics, paints, adhesives, inks, biomaterials, and other fields. Waterborne polyurethanes (WPUs) have many advantages as same as solvent borne polyurethanes (SPUs), such as high flexibility, high abrasion resistance, high tensile strength, good adhesion ability and good low-temperature resistance. But, in comparing with solvent-borne polyurethanes, water-borne types are more environmentally friendly and easier to transport and store. Thus, a study of various research papers and other literature is presented in the following review. The review covers various aspects in the field of waterborne polyurethane dispersions (WPUDs) from the basic concepts of nature of the raw materials involved in the process towards dispersion’s preparation strategies. Moreover, the characteristics of water-borne polyurethanes were discussed. We have focused mainly on the adhesive application among the various applications of waterborne polyurethanes, followed by a review of study detailing on the requirements for the good adhesive bonding, theory of adhesion, types of polyurethane adhesives and adhesive tests.
