A Lacanian Reading of Laurie Halse Anderson's Speak

Literary scholars have revealed many worthful ideas about Melinda's character in Laurie Halse Anderson's Speak (۱۹۹۹). However, Melinda's identity formation through the lens of Lacanian stages has not been studied in previous critical works on Speak. Therefore, I aim to offer a Lacanian reading of Speak in order to show the formation of Melinda's identity. I argue that Melinda's identity formation can be discussed through Lacanian concepts of imaginary order, symbolic order, and real order. In addition, the findings of this study suggest that besides imaginary order, symbolic order, and real order, Melinda's thoughts and acts in the novel reflect Lacanian mirror stage and object petit a.
