چکیده مقاله:

Background and aim: During pregnancy, dietary and hormonal changes, as well as increased nausea and vomiting, can affect the dental and the gingival tissues, inducing microbiological changes in the oral flora and immunosuppression. Studies suggests that poor oral health during pregnancy can lead to perinatal complications, such as low birth weight and preterm delivery as well as poor oral health in children. Adherence of mothers to oral health behaviors during pregnancy can significantly affect their own oral and dental health and consequently their babies.Materials and method: This review study is conducted in ۲۰۲۲ and includes nearly articles indexed in English on databases like, Pubmed, Google scholar, Science direct, from ۲۰۱۵ to ۲۰۲۱. Searching some English words such as, Oral health, Attitude, Practice, Knowledge, Midwives, Pregnancy, among English articles, facilitated this study. Results: Prevention and early detection of oral disease in pregnancy can assist in managing a significant bacterial and inflammatory condition during pregnancy like periodontitis and reduce the risk of infants developing early childhood caries. One opportunity to improve the oral health care of pregnant women is during the care offered by obstetricians, nurses and especially midwives because midwives are often the first health professional pregnant women encounter and they support families in the child’s first year. Therefore, midwives are the preferred health-care professionals for passing on key health messages to pregnant women, for sensitizing them about oral health and for referring them to a dentist. Conclusion: Midwives can be educated on how to assess pregnant women’s oral health status and make referrals to dentists if necessary. Against this background, pregnant women are recommended to visit the dentist during pregnancy, and to maintain good oral hygiene with daily tooth brushing and the use of fluoride toothpaste.
