Portrayal of a Nursing Profession in Iranian Cinema and Television Films: The Need to Change Stereotypes

Background and aim: Despite the fact that nursing is recognized as a profession all over the world, the results of previous studies have shown that the nature of this profession is still not well understood and nurses are still faced with stereotypes and incorrect professional image. This research was conducted to evaluate the presentation of nurses' images in Iranian films in the last three decades.Materials and method: This research was performed in ۲۰۱۹ on ۱۶ Iranian cinema and television films based on content analysis method. At first We search and evaluate this films by using the researcher-made checklist and report findings based on three time periods of the ۱۹۹۱s, ۲۰۰۱s and ۲۰۱۱s.Results: Most of the films evaluated in each of the three decades, were belonged to social genre. In all films of the ۱۹۷۰s, a contemporary superstar played the role of nurse, while in the next two decades, the role of nurses was left to ordinary actors. Most of the nurses that portrayed in these films were young and single. Most importantly, the nature of the majority of works that provided by nurses over a three-decade period, ranged from the specialized to the non- special work.Conclusion: Presentation of non-scientific image of the nursing profession and magnifying features such as celibacy, youth and inappropriate appearance of nurses can have a devastating effect on the entry and attraction of candidate into the nursing profession and the persistence of society's incorrect stereotypes of nursing staff. Therefore, improving the interaction of nursing managers with the media and providing expert advice on film projects is an inevitable necessity.
