Nursing missed care in Neonatal Intensive Care Units

Background and aim: key element affecting the care quality is missed or unfinished care, especially in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This study aims is study of nursing missed care and related factors from perspectives of nurses in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in hospitals of Kerman.Materials and method: This research is a cross-sectional descriptive study. The study was conducted in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of hospitals in Kerman city in Iran. ۱۳۰ health care providers of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit were participated in this study (Kerman, Rafsanjan, Bam, and Jiroft). Missed nursing care and related factor questionnaires were used for data collection. SPSS ۲۲, descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data collection. The significance level was set at ۰.۰۵.Results: Study results show highest missed nursing care were belonged participation in “Check the condition of the endotracheal tube and nasal tube according to the protocol” (۳.۹۱ + ۰.۳۱)” and “Performing, sending tests and samples according to the order” (۳.۹۱ + ۰.۳۱), the highest reason of missed care where “Drugs are not available when needed” (۳.۶۳ + ۰.۷۲) and ‘Lack of nursing staff” (۳.۶۳ + ۰.۶۳). There was a significant relationship between missed nursing care and city.Conclusion: Neonatal nurses frequently report missing at least one necessary nursing care activity. In our study "Communicating with Parents” and “Emotional support for parents were more commonly nursing missed care. Lack of nursing staff and drug were associated with missed nursing care in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. According to previous study outcomes of missed nursing care included extended hospitalizations for preterm infants and increased perceptions of poor pain management and readiness for discharge. Understanding missed nursing care in neonatal nursing units will help to inform better practices in care delivery.
