چکیده مقاله:

Translation is a complicated decision-making apparatus for agents called translators to produce knowledge and value in societies. Women translators have been the object of many studies during the last decades and their precious contributions to different fields have been emphasized. In the ۱۹۷۰s and early ۱۹۸۰s, the French sociologist, Pierre Bourdieu developed his conceptualization of the four resources; economic, cultural, social, and symbolic capital. Basing its analysis on the four types of capitals and using Tarajem software, a bibliographical database on published books in Iran, this research utilized a sociological approach to provide a report of works translated by Iranian women which highlights their functional role in producing multiple capitals in the Iranian setting. Bourdieu (۱۹۷۷, ۱۹۸۴, ۱۹۸۶) believes that economic capital is accumulated through monetary and material resources while cultural capital means different qualifications, skills, and educational degrees gained and provided by agents in the field. Another important constituent in his approach is social capital by which he means those networks and relations agents shape in the field (society). Symbolic capital refers to characteristics which bring about prestige and respect for agents. The findings revealed that translating a remarkable number of books into Persian in both literary and non-literary fields within different decades led to the creation of a scholarly network among Iranian women and other agents (social capital) with a growing legitimization of their activities (symbolic capital). Through translating, they enriched the circulation of knowledge (cultural capital) and the financial gains of publishing and translation companies (economic capital).
