Genetic Association of ADIPOQ Gene Variant (rs۸۲۲۳۹۶) with Type ۲ Diabetes in Iranian Patients

Background: Genetic and environmental factors influence serum adiponectin and may contribute to the risk of metabolic syndrome and type ۲ diabetes (T۲D). There are many studies conducted to investigate the association between different polymorphisms of the ADI­POQ geneand T۲D risk in all around the world. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the association between adiponectin gene (ADIPOQ) polymorphism (rs۸۲۲۳۹۶) and the risk of T۲D, which has not been studied yet in the Iranian patients. Methods: Selected SNP was genotyped in ۴۰ T۲D patients and ۴۰ controls by PCR amplification and direct Sanger sequencing. Fisher's exact test and Chi۲ test were used to estimate the risk of T۲D associated with the selected SNP, and genotypic and allelic distributions were compared between the case and control groups. Results: It was revealed that there were no significant differences in the distribution of genotypes and allele frequencies of rs۸۲۲۳۹۶ between Iranian patients with T۲D and controls. Conclusion: According to the results, -۳۹۷۱ A/G polymorphism is unlikely to be involved in the susceptibility to or the severity of T۲D in Iranian patients. Further large prospective studies are required to confirm these findings.
