چکیده مقاله:
Background: A relationship between infertility and the generationof reactive oxygen species (ROS) has been reportedpreviously. A small amount of ROS is necessary for the physiologicalfunction of sperm including the capacitation, hyperactivationand acrosomal reaction. However, high levels of ROScan cause infertility through different pathways. The aim of thiss tudy is reviewing the association between oxidative s tress andmale infertility.Materials and Methods: A review literature search of eligibles tudies was conducted in PubMed database from ۲۰۱۵ to۲۰۲۲ for s tudies evaluating the association between oxidatives tress and male infertility using the following search s trategy:("oxidative s tress" OR "ROS") AND ("male infertility") as keywords.S tudies (original papers, sys tematic review and metanalysis)were included in this review. Results: Mechanisms responsible for the role of oxidatives tress in male infertility include oxidative des truction of spermlipid membranes, damage to gamete DNA both by gene mutationand by direct breakdown of the DNA backbone, mitochondrialdysfunction and apoptotic cell death. The intrinsicreactivity of these metabolites in peroxidative damage inducedby ROS, particularly H۲O۲ and the superoxide anion, has beenproposed as a major cause of defective sperm function in casesof male infertility. Conclusion: Accurate assessment of ROS levels and, subsequently,OS is vital, as this will help clinicians both elucidatethe fertility s tatus and identify the subgroups of patients thatrespond or do not respond to therapeutic s trategies
