The Effect of Air Pollution on Assis ted ReproductiveTechnology

Background: Ambient air pollution has negative effects on humanhealth including reproductive sys tem. The aim of the currents tudy is to review the impact of air pollution on assis tedreproductive technology (ART).Materials and Methods: Eligible s tudies were selected froman electronic literature search from the PubMed, Scopus, andGoogle Scholar databases to April ۲۰۲۲ and associated referencesin published s tudies. We have included the human s tudiescorresponding to the search terms. The results were res trictedto publications in English. We have excluded articles whose resultsdid not concern fertility. Totally ۱۱ s tudies included in thisreview.Results: Air pollution has a negative effect on the quantity ofgametes, a reduction in the number of retrieved oocytes, frozenembryo transfer cycles, embryo development, fetal development,and an increase in miscarriages. The severity of theseeffects depends on several factors, including the duration ofexposure to air pollution and the level of ambient air pollution.Hormonal dis turbances, oxidative s tress induction, inflammation,cell DNA, and epigenetic alterations are mechanisms toexplain this negative impact.Conclusion: These findings sugges t that air pollution may adverselyaffect and highlight the need to reduce ambient air pollutionexposure for successful ART.
