The Effect of Acesulfame-K Adminis tration duringPregnancy on Spermatogenesis

Background: Today consumers prefer low-calorie foods andbeverages in order to experience good‐tas ting sweet food andbeverages that are safe for the teeth and lower in calorie content;diabetics and obese people can also use these foods. Theaim of this s tudy was to inves tigate the effect of acesulfame-Kadminis tration during pregnancy on spermatogenesis.Materials and Methods: ۴ groups of rats were intraperitoneallyinjected with Ace-K doses of ۵۰, ۱۰۰, ۲۰۰, ۴۰۰ mg/kg bodyweight during pregnancy. After the lactation, male newborn ratswere divided into two groups: "treated group" which were receivedAce-K as same doses and method as their mothers and"untreated group" was kept without injections until puberty.The blood samples were collected and LH, FSH, and tes tos teronewere measured. Weight changes and tes tis weight to bodyweight ratio were examined.Results: Tes tos terone were significantly increased in "treatedgroup" at ۵۰, ۲۰۰, and ۴۰۰. FSH were significantly decreased in"treated group" at ۵۰, ۱۰۰ and in "untreated group" in ۵۰, ۲۰۰,۴۰۰. Neonatal weight gain until puberty period was significantlyhigher in "treated group" at ۵۰ and ۲۰۰. There was a significantdifference in weight gain of pregnant rats at a dose of ۲۰۰.Conclusion: In this s tudy changes in hormones levels did notnecessarily indicate the negative effects of Ace-K on fertility
