With the worldwide increasing penetration of windpower generation in recent years, wind curtailment rate has alsoincreased owing to various reasons including the lack oftransmission capacity, grid congestion limits, and surplusgeneration during low load hours. In order to manage thecurtailment issues, excess renewable-based generation needs bestored when it is higher than demand so that it can be utilizedduring peak hours. Green hydrogen and Power-to-X systems,which are relatively novel techniques for converting surplusrenewable power generation into other products such as fuels andheat, play an important role in the reduction of wind powercurtailment as well as compensating the fluctuating nature ofpower generation from renewable sources and increasing thepenetration of renewable-based generation in the grid. It is thepurpose of this paper to investigate the recent opportunities forwind curtailment reduction by means of power-to-X solutions andgreen hydrogen concept. In this way, the role of two maincategories of power-to-X technologies, i.e. power-to-gas andpower-to-heat, are investigated through related recent studies.The results of assessments reveal that green hydrogen and powerto-X systems, besides their several well-known benefits, can alsobe regarded as beneficial solutions for reduction of wind powercurtailment in energy systems.
