White Fang: The Recognition of Metonymy in an English Fiction Based on Semantic as a Corpus -Based Study

The purpose of the current study is to find metonymic instances as figurative language in White Fang novel by Jack London as the corpus. The study is done in form of analysis on metonymic expressions based on semantics by using of Dousti &Gowhari’s model(۲۰۱۵) [۱]. The model is a combination of Safavi and I. Saeed’s (۲۰۰۸) models[۲,۳]. These two were originally introduced by Lakoff and Johnson (۱۹۷۸) [۴]. Dousti & Gowhari’s model consists of ۲۵ types of metonymic cases. Based on this modified version, an attempt was made to classify each instance of metonymy. ۲۰۰ expressions were chosen from the ۲۷ pages (۱۲۷۳۵ words) of the fiction[۵]. As a result, out of those ۲۰۰ expressions,۸۶ were metonymic , whereas ۱۱۴ items were not metonymic
