Investigating the Effect of the Dilemma Discussion Training Method on Promoting Moral Orientation

Social changes, the growth of scientific products and information technology, have created many challenges in societies. Despite the changes, educational institutions and parents have not provided sufficient opportunities for the development of the moral capacity. The issue how to teach morality has generated much discussion and interest and faces many challenges. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of dilemma discussion on students’ moral orientation. The present study was an experimental study that was conducted by using a pre-test and post-test design with a control group. The statistical population included all of Shiraz University undergraduate students who were studying in the academic year ۱۳۹۹-۱۴۰۰ and were randomly selected among the students who stated that they were prepared to collaborate in research and were randomly assigned into two groups of ۱۶ people (experimental and control groups). Research tool was Moral Competence Test (Lind, ۱۹۹۵) that both groups in research answered it in two rounds of pre-test and post-test and experimental intervention was performed for experiment group using dilemma discussion training method virtually and for eight sessions of ۹۰ minutes. Data analysis was performed by Analysis of Covariance and the results showed that after the implementation of the dilemma discussion training method, there was a significant difference in the moral orientation scores of the experimental group compared to the control group. Accordingly, it can be said that the dilemma discussion training method has been able to improve the moral orientation of students.
