چکیده مقاله:
Objective: In dental and maxillofacial radiation; No radiation dose to the thyroid gland is inevitable. Thyroid radio sensitivity has shown more in females and young adults. Also the dental radiation were required more in young adults and is necessary to protect thyroid. The aim of this article is to evaluate the shielding effects of thyroid for all dental images.Method: In this review study, in order to find appropriate papers related to evaluation of thyroid shielding, a comprehensive search of valid English scientific databases such as: PubMed, Google scholar, Scopus in the years ۲۰۱۳-۲۰۲۲ with a combination of keywords, thyroid shielding, dental radiation, radiation protection were performed. From the total number of papers obtained, ۳۰ papers were chosen. Results: In most of the papers using a thyroid shield were recommended; a tightly thyroid collar from lead and a ./۲۵ mm thickness could prepare at least ۴۵% dose reduction. But in indirect digital panoramic imaging systems despite the direct ones thyroid shielding didn't have an extra positive effect. For cone beam computed tomography there wasn't a single opinion; routinely used of thyroid collar towards the ideas of artifacts, pathosis, obscure anatomical structures was a paradox. False shielding positioning could boost thyroid dose. Conclusion: There is conflicting evidence about the risk of thyroid cancer caused by dental radiographs, but despite the small but real risk, it is recommended to use thyroid shields considering the correct positioning of the shield in a way that does not block the edges of the mandible and create artifacts.
