A review of Nerium oleander effects as herbal therapy: apossible candidate in the treatment of COVID-۱۹

چکیده مقاله:

Background and Aim : Coronavirus disease (COVID-۱۹) is an infectious disease, caused by theacute respiratory syndrome virus (SARS-COV-۲), which occurred in late November ۲۰۱۹ inWuhan, China, has become a major health crisis. Although there is no completely efficient antiviraldrug with low toxicity and side effects against COVID-۱۹, the use of medicinal herbs with lessside effects can be of great help in the treatment of patients with COVID-۱۹. Thus, the aim of thisstudy is to review the therapeutic effects of Nerium oleander as a possible candidate in thetreatment of patients with COVID-۱۹.Methods : The present study is a review study by searching in reliable scientific databasesincluding Pubmed, Google Scholar and Scopus from ۲۰۰۰ to ۲۰۲۲, using the keywords SARSCOV-۲, Covid۱۹, Nerium oleander, Treatment, Anti-inflammatory, Antiviral, Antibacterial,Antifungal.Results : In this study, ۱۲۵ articles were reviewed. Therefore, with active and effective compoundssuch as Cardenolides, Glycosides, Triterpenoids and Oleandrin, the plant can have anti-viral, antiinflammatory,anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and antioxidant activities and the results of in vitro andin vivo studies confirm the therapeutic effects of Nerium oleander as well.Conclusion : Considering the pandemic nature of COVID-۱۹, severe involvement of lung andother complications including secondary bacterial and fungal infections, shock, cytokine stormand pulmonary fibrosis, there is a need for effective drug on the aforementioned factors andaccording to the review study of Nerium oleander, due to its effects, a therapy can be evaluated asa drug candidate in the treatment of COVID-۱۹ patients in a clinical trial.
