ASSESSMENT OF PROTECTION OPERATION AND NON-VIABLE TRANSIENTS BY ANN

This paper proposes the use of ANN to establish the complicated relationship between the transient behavior of the power system following the clearing of a large disturbance and the operation of the protection relays, especially, the distance relays. Operation of protection devices and mal-operation of other system components during post-disturbance transients can significantly affect the ability of a power system to recover from a disturbance. A system, which was otherwise stable, may lose stability because of some protection or viability induced event. ANN is a valuable tool for such conditions, when extremely nonlinear relations between input and output exist
