چکیده مقاله:

Introduction: Correlation between pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and tobacco smoke has long been a topic of interest among researchers. Although the relation has been verified by most of these studies, various figures have been reported from different countries regarding the prevalence of smoking among patients with PTB. Therefore we aimed to evaluate the smoking prevalence in these patients and its effective factors in Iran).Method: In this cross-sectional study subjects were included through a multi-stage cluster sampling method. Sampling was executed during ۲۰۱۲ to ۲۰۱۴ on a first-come, first served basis from the newly diagnosed PTB patients referring to health centers under supervision of medical universities in Tehran. Data collection was performed via a face-to-face interview and a questionnaire with enquiries on the smoking habits. Results: In this survey ۱۴۲۵ newly-diagnosed PTB patients were evaluated and ۱۲۱۸ subjects were included in this survey, the mean age of whom was ۴۹.۶۰±۱۹.۹۰ years. ۲۳۸ subjects (۲۰.۱%) stated daily smoking, ۲۳ (۱.۹%) stated occasional smoking and ۱۲۹ (۱۰.۹%) had quitted before the time of diagnosis. According to multivariate logistic regression analysis, opium use (P-Value <۰.۰۰۱, OR=۴۷.۸۹), educational level of academic (P-Value<۰.۰۰۱, OR=۱۲.۳۰), living in rural areas (P-Value=۰.۰۰۱, OR=۵.۱۱), office workers (P-Value<۰.۰۵, OR=۴.۲۷) and being single (P-Value=۰.۰۰۱, OR=۰.۱۱) were found to be independent risk factors for smoking in these patients. Conclusions: Overall, the prevalence of smoking was found to be considerably higher among newly diagnosed TB patients compared to the figures reported by recent studies conducted on nationally representative populations.
