Buckling Analysis of Laminated Composite Cylindrical Shells under Axial Compression Using Finite Strip and Finite Ring Methods

A semi analytical method based on minimizing the potential energy approach using two kinds of elements so called strip and ring is used to perform linear buckling analysis of laminated composite cylindrical shells made of layers of high strength Carbon-Epoxy plies, under axial compression and simply supported end conditions. Moreover, the formulation of these two elements is based on classical shell theory (CLST) aswell as first order shear deformation shell theory (FST) by incorporating Sanders-Koiter strain-displacement relations. To check the validity of results another analysis based on conventional FEM using ANSYS is performed. The comparison of results reveals the ability of developed approaches in buckling analysis of laminated cylindrical shells with very low number of degrees of freedom and computational efforts.
