Effect of Ginger (Zingiber officinale) on Chemotherapy-Induced Nausea and Vomiting (CINV)

Introduction and Aims: Chemotherapy-Induced Nausea and Vomiting (CINV) is a common side effect of chemotherapy. These side effects may lead to several adverse impacts in patients receiving chemotherapeutic agents, such as decreased quality of life, anxiety, depression, malnutrition, and lack of compliance to the medication. With respect to the above-mentioned problems, there is a great demand for the introduction of safe agents that could effectively reduce CINV rate. One of the potential sources for such agents is medicinal plants, and among them, ginger is a promising candidate. Ginger has a long history in many cultures as a folk-remedy for nausea and gastrointestinal discomfort. Empirical research has demonstrated that ginger may be effective as an anti-nausea agent. The aims of the present review were to detail the researches that evaluated the efficacy ofginger in the prevention of CINV.Methods and Material: Published studies were identified using the Google Scholar, Science Direct, PubMed, Scopus databases for ۲۰۱۰-present. This review was limited to the current published research from randomized controlled trials.Results: ۲۰ out of ۱۰۰ papers were including. Fifteen articles that have been reviewed results that ginger give benefits to reduce CINV showed a significant and five showing no effect on measures of CINV.Conclusion: Nausea and vomiting is a side effect of the chemotherapy can be treated by ginger.
