The effect of spirituality-based palliative care on pain, nausea, and vomiting, and quality of life in women with colon cancer: A clinical trial study

Introduction and Aims: Spirituality-based palliative care is an essential component in cancer patients, which plays an important role in coping with illness. Our study aimed to determine the effect of spirituality-based palliative care on quality of life, pain and, nausea and vomiting in females with colon cancer in Iran.Materials and Method: This randomized controlled clinical trial included ۸۰ female patients with colon cancer who were hospitalized to Shiraz Amir hospital in Iran. The subjects were randomly allocated to the intervention and control group. Spirituality-based palliative care programs in the intervention group included individual These programs ing. lbased spiritual support, and spiritual counsel-support, peer spiritual support, group spiritualwere held for ۴ weeks, one session every week. Using three questionnaires; Brief Pain Inventory questionnaire, WHO Quality of Life questionnaire and the nausea and vomiting questionnaire data were collected from both groups, before, immediately after, and one month after the intervention. Data analysis was performed by using descriptive and inferential statistics by SPSS software version ۲۴. Trial Registration Number: IRCT ۲۰۱۹۰۱۰۶۰۴۲۲۵۲N۱Results: eighty patients were enrolled: mean age was ۴۳ years old, ۲۳ % were in stage ۲ colon cancer, and ۵۳% had moderate religious beliefs. The results showed a significant difference between both groups in QoL, pain, nausea and vomiting of the patients (P <۰/۰۵).Conclusion: The present study demonstrated, spirituality-based palliative care improved quality of life, reduced pain and the level of nausea and vomiting. Therefore, nurses can to improve spirituality-based palliative care for cancer patients. More studies in this regard are recommended.
