Introduction: Some of the pilgrims were returned to Iran due to illness, aging, disease exacerbation, and physical or mental disabilities to perform the necessary actions in Hajj. However, this can be imposed the individual, social and economic side effects on the country. The aim of this study was to investigate the causes of Iranian patients’ pilgrims return to the country in Hajj season in ۲۰۱۰.
Methods: This cross sectional study was done in psychiatric department of Iranian Red Crescent society Hospital in Mecca and Medina during the Hajj season in Saudi Arabia in ۲۰۱۰. All patients with acute conditions were studied regarding DSMIV-TR criteria and a detailed psychiatric interview.
Findings: Totally, ۱۰۶ patients with different problems were sent to Iran during the Hajj ۲۰۱۰. The mental disorder was the most common cause (%۲۶/۴); then, the highest frequency of disorders was related to dementia and acute delirium, %۴۱/۲ and %۳۸/۴ respectively.
Conclusion: Mental illness was the most common reason among pilgrims who were returned to Iran before Hajj season in ۲۰۱۰. Actually, by accurate diagnostic and screening tests during medical examination in the country, and patients care in timely use of medicines during the pilgrimage, most physicians can help the patients and decrease the cost effectively.
