Criteria for choosing the best substation protection scheme

Protection planning because of its critical role of keeping substation alive is one of the most important parts of a substation implementation phase that directly affects on total cost, substation availability, and security requirements.Although the IEC ۶۱۸۵۰ standard is widely used all over the world, but some designers prefer conventional protection schemes rather than using IEC ۶۱۸۵۰ goose message for protection function.This paper based on the project defined in the Niroo Research Institute of IRAN with the title “investigations of IEC ۶۱۸۵۰ implementation problems in the substation automation systems in the country considering the variety of manufacturers productions” firstly investigates the major factors in two conventional and IEC ۶۱۸۵۰ protection schemes, then suggests an algorithm for choosing an appropriate scheme considering substation specifications
