Technical and Economic Comparison Between Solid State Transformers(SSTs) And Traditional Distribution Transformers

Solid state transformers (SSTs) are considered as a basic requirement for the future smart distribution systems. To be able to have a realistic comparison between the price of SST and traditional transformers(TTs) in this paper, the price of a traditional transformer beside auxiliaries which makes its function comparable with that of the SST are evaluated. In this regard the capabilities of a SST is introduced. The auxiliary devices required beside TT are identified and their costs are listed. The total cost is used to be compared with the cost of a SST in the same rating. Material costing method is used to estimate prices. In this method, only material costs are considered. Employee wages and profit are not considered in this paper. The final analysis shows that considering the auxiliaries the ratio of the price of SST to TT becomes smaller even if it is still higher than ۱.
