Qualitative attributes in Platanus orientalis seeds coming from three different regions in North Macedonia

Platanus orientalis L. is naturally distributed across the Eastern Mediterranean, including the territory of North Macedonia. The value of the plane trees comes mainly from their social services and cultural significance. However the ecological and economical services the species provides are also of high importance. The ecological demands of Platanus orientalis are oriented mainly towards water and this can be a great challenge to overcome as periods of drought are predicted. North Macedonia, albeit being relatively small in regards to surface, hosts ۸ climatic zones which determine various conditions for plant growth and development. In the present study, we compared the qualitative attributes (physical and physiological) of Platanus orientalis seeds gathered from three regions which are characterized by different climate. The results show minor but not statistically significant variations in the examined properties. But we observe curious correlation when in Location ۱ we have seeds with smaller weight and size but same moisture. Our study also highlights the need for future work that could focus on genetic variations, possible developmental difference and plasticity potential of the Platanus orientalis.
