An integrated layout for woodworking plant-Introducing coding system for facility layout design

As technology enhanced, the furniture manufacturing which is among multi-parts and multi-process production types, evolved to have much more details as well. The furniture production line today consists of high tech machines which radically differ from unit job carpentry. The factories today are needed to opt for lean manufacturing. In this regard, wood engineers are unable to draw layout and process diagram charts with existing few simple symbols. Consequently, if a detailed layout is needed, more data is required. In finding data some difficulties may arise especially in new manufacturing facilities where the data is not yet available. Also, when the layout is developed formodern and automated facilities, the required data cannot be obtained from historical data or from similar facilities since they may not exist. We have designed a coding method that eliminates the confusing method of using simple identical symbols and makes the layout more readable, professional and efficient. In this method every machine or equipment has its own code which is related to its station and the code is very short in order to make the layout clear. This paper briefly describes the furniture production line and in the layout designing we have also taken into account the CNC machining centers and robotic system that are becoming prevalent in the wood workingfactories.
